At this point, I'd love to see us implement rank choice voting, which would lead to results that far more accurately reflect the will of the electorate, while also solving the problem Anonymous brings up in the first comment. Glad you like the blog!JD Stillwaterhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16208191482917231547noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-867089453858920482.post-40383161965828870702016-08-13T15:31:31.583-07:002016-08-13T15:31:31.583-07:00Anonymous, I'm sure you're right, but I...Anonymous, I'm sure you're right, but I'm not sure how to tell how much it matters. The last six elections were won by far lower popular-vote margins than your examples. Working backwards in time: Obama 51.06%; Obama 52.93%; Bush 50.73%; Bush 47.87%; Clinton 49.23%. Some of those were touted as "landslides." Bush actually lost the popular vote against Gore, even with Nadar in the race. The highest popular vote percentage in history was Lyndon Johnson with 61.05%. Incidentally, the lowest was John Quincy Adams in 1824 who won with 30.92% of the vote. Second lowest was... wait for it!... Abe Lincoln with 39.65% in 1860. I expect that the winner of the 2016 election will struggle to govern no matter how the voting goes. The negatives are just too high on both sides. Data are from here: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_United_States_presidential_elections_by_popular_vote_margin. You give the eventual victor shorter coattails and power: a President with 60% popular vote is less powerful than one with a 75% popular vote victory.

If you want your candidate to have real power? Give them a clear victory.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
